Where it all began…
Years ago I got this crazy idea to come up with a tiny house curriculum for high schools, that would also produce a tutorial series with resources on how to build a tiny house that anyone would be able to use to construct a tiny house. We did this kickstarter project, that got hundreds of thousands of views on social media, as well as a slot on CNN if we reached our funding goal. We only got like halfway to our funding goal, so the school assembly idea dissolved (for now). However, this project introduced me to Seattle Tiny Homes, and partnering with them, we created the most comprehensive building plans for a tiny house that has ever been generated, and it is still hands down the best resource for building your own tiny house.
Where it is now…
I got involved with Tiny houses directly out of college in 2014. Fast forward to 2021, and I successfully subdivided some property for a parcel to dedicate to be used solely for a tiny house on a foundation, utilizing Appendix Q of the 2018 IRC (International Residential Code). A year later, and I had a set of plans (construction documents) submitted to the City of Spokane, Washington, and was able to begin construction in January of 2023. Three months later, and we had a completed tiny house on a foundation, which we are currently using as a short-term rental property. I have created a course which shares all of the lessons I learned along the way, and teaches everything to expect in the process, from schedule, to permitting, and detailed breakdowns of costs. If you are interested in building a tiny house on a foundation either for yourself or as a rental property, and want to remove ALL the mystery surrounding everything it takes to do it, then this course is for you!
What’s next…
Now that I have successfully constructed a tiny house on a foundation, and was able to track every aspect of the entire experience and document it, (and retain a now cash flowing asset), the next stage in this process (of course) is to build a tiny house village.
THE VISION
The goal is to select an ideal piece of property, with an ideal owner, and co-create a village that is specifically focused on community. The development will have a maximum of 24 units. This development will most likely adhere to Appendix Q AND/OR Cottage Housing Development requirements. It will be in a magical location that is beautiful and accessible. There will likely be a shared clubhouse with undecided amenities, and shared carport/garages to keep the footprint small, and the development attractive. It will be a place people see from a distance and want to explore and visit. It will be in either Eastern Washington or the top northern corner of Idaho, somewhere between Priest River and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
As this project develops, I will document and journal the journey and share it here, and share how I did it, so that it can be replicated by others. It will be great. I am excited for the future, and when you see it, you will be too.
A huge shout out to Gavin Boothe’s mad cinematography skills on this original endeavor. He did everything from scripting the video, storyboarding the scenes, shooting and editing. He did it all. Also, Jesse Anselm, the young man who was helping us with the curriculum, has gone on to become a thriving Entrepreneur. I couldn’t be prouder of him and what he has been able to accomplish. Hopefully down the road we can reassemble the original dream team and make something incredible happen.
